What's New 11-18-22
Natalie Mering watches the world crumble from a pier on her latest album. Her fifth full-length comes as the second instalment of a trilogy that includes its critically acclaimed predecessor, 2019’s Titanic Rising. Whereas Titanic Rising anticipated the onset of doom, And in the Darkness, Hearts Aglow finds her swimming in its deep dark waters.
Trust finds Sohn further exploring sounds that first found success in the electronic and noir-pop spaces, and now growing deeper roots in folk structures and aching, emotive balladry. While still drawing on the influences that garnered such a rabid international audience, the album is an unequivocal statement of an ambitious auteur beyond genre.
The desire of Special Interest is to dismantle genre. 2018’s Spiraling and 2020’s widely acclaimed The Passion Of articulated those aims, driven by dance grooves and electronic textures as much as hardcore riffs, but the group expands the vision with Endure, pushing their sound to both its bleakest and its sweetest brinks, adding raucous glam punk to the mix.
The Universal Migrator is brimming with climactic overtures, enticing vocal harmonies, and memorably melodic themes – all the makings of a classic prog metal album. Lucassen's strong compositions and alluring arrangements strike an engaging chord as the music and overall production hearken back to the glory days of defiantly inventive progressive rock.
A career-spanning, cross-label anthology featuring 23 essential recordings from 1971-2020 for the first time on one album. Includes Dolly's performances with Kenny Rogers, Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette and "Faith," her delightfully surprising 2020 collaboration with the Swedish electropop dance duo Galantis (featuring Mr. Probz).
Experience the world’s biggest-selling album with over 100 million in sales and the first album to be certified triple Diamond by the RIAA – on this new Thriller 40th Anniversary 2CD set. Disc 1 is the 1982 smash album that changed pop music forever, featuring seven top 10 hits. Disc 2 includes Thriller-era bonus material including previously unreleased demos.
Saxophonist and composer Charles Lloyd is a free spirit, master musician, and visionary. At 84, he remains at the height of his powers and as prolific as ever. As a sound seeker, Lloyd has perhaps found no greater manifestation than on his Trio of Trios project. The third, Trios: Sacred Thread, features guitarist Julian Lage and percussionist Zakir Hussain.
A thrilling, previously unissued live recording of Elvin Jones' quartet that captures the legendary drummer's emergence as a bandleader at a little-known NYC club where he had a weekly residency after leaving John Coltrane's band in the late 1960s. Featuring Joe Farrell on tenor saxophone, Billy Greene on piano, and Wilbur Little on bass.
