What's New 7-7-23
Living in LA, there are a lot of people looking for that one trick that will help the new them emerge fully realized, successful & happy. It's a worthwhile, but doomed pursuit, & the best we can hope for is to be present in a moment. Local Natives' album comes at a moment of personal metamorphosis. Former selves melting away, some becoming fathers, some enduring periods of isolation, loss, & identity crisis. Time Will Wait For No One is a mantra of reassurance in response to relentless changes.
I Want It All Right Now is the sixth studio album from Californian alternative rock act Grouplove. With the help of Grammy-winning producer John Congleton, Hannah Hooper and co. pursue the same arena-ready combination of singalong radio-friendly rock and Nineties-influenced indie that made them such a hit when they first emerged at the start of the 2010s.
From T. Swift herself: “I first made Speak Now, completely self-written, between the ages of 18 and 20. The songs that came from this time in my life were marked by their brutal honesty, unfiltered diaristic confessions and wild wistfulness. I love this album because it tells a tale of growing up, flailing, flying and crashing … and living to speak about it. With six extra songs I’ve sprung loose from the vault, I absolutely cannot wait to celebrate it.”
On her first release in seven years, recorded with long-time creative collaborators John Parish and Flood, PJ Harvey builds a sonic universe somehow located in a space between life’s opposites, and between recent history and the ancient past. Scattered with biblical imagery and references to Shakespeare, all of these distinctions ultimately dissolve into something profoundly uplifting and redemptive.
Lifeguard make music that adeptly balance melody and chaos, rhythm and drone. Hooks and noise are held to the same standard. Both have to stick. The EPs here find the band refining its voice – honing songs that are succinct, catchy, and propulsive. Lifeguard write together through collaboration and improvisation, but they’ve learned to streamline their sound, to make each hook, beat, and gesture purposeful.

Gus Dapperton - Henge - Warner Records
Alt-pop icon Gus Dapperton’s vast and ambitious album Henge builds a new world – tugging the listeners between night and day, socializing and solitude. With nearly 2 billion collective streams across his career – the Warwick, NY native constructed the album with the concept of entering an underworld as the sun goes down and trying to get home before dawn—or risk being stuck in a time loop. Sonically the album delivers a contemporary eclectic sprawl, at times landing between 80’s new-wave and 70’s funk. Collaborators include Cruel Santino, Ocean Vuong, and BENEE – who Dapperton reunites with musically following their double-platinum viral hit “Supalonely” which has amassed over 1 billion streams. Dapperton’s music maintains the intimacy that made his previous offerings so resonant – including singles Horizons, Wet Cement, and Don’t Let Me Down.

What's New 6-30-23
In 2020, a tornado damaged her new home in Nashville, followed two weeks later by the pandemic. That November, Williams suffered a stroke impairing some of her motor skills, forcing her to learn to walk again and taking away her ability to play the guitar. Stories from a Rock n Roll Heart marks a triumphant return from one of our most revered artists and songwriters.
The Aces are back, and the Utah foursome sound better than ever. Exploring topics such as love, longing and heartbreak, the queer indie band’s sparkling new project is a depiction of where they are as a band, how far they have come in a short space of time. A confident, self-assured album, it provides a career snapshot -- a complex, yet hugely compelling journey.
Debut solo album from Grian Chatten, vocalist of Dublin's critically-acclaimed band Fontaines D.C. Each song here has a sweep of colour and textures that breathe life into his lucid tales. Over its nine tracks, Chaos For The Fly takes in all of life's rich emotions, transporting the listener to a place you will find yourself returning to again and again.
Created In the heart of Athens, GA with their trusty-producer, Henry Barbe (Deerhunter, Drive By Truckers) You Know Who pushes the boundaries of modern country and rock n' roll music. The six piece makes a tight but soulful album with featured guests such as Nikki Lane, John James Tourville (Deslondes), and Annie Leeth (Faye Webster).
Hammond, Jr. builds on Francis Trouble's soul-baring mood by finding some new wrinkles on his eloquent guitar pop -- and maybe some gray hairs, too. Fatherhood and the pandemic spurred him to think about the past in new ways, and it's a viewpoint that's well-suited to the world-weary undercurrents of the music he's made since the early 2000s.
Despite the growth here, there is a sense of unease that permeates through the whole affair. Vocalist Cameron Winter says he was preoccupied with something he describes as “modern doom”. Regardless, 3D Country is a huge step forward. Brash, exciting, irreverent and ultimately only something that could’ve come from the minds and hearts of Geese themselves.
Accompanied by their Nashville based touring band, Holler is a true departure. From the blues inspired "Sissy Said" to the country soul of "Never Be Another You" the sisters showcase their celebrated sibling harmonies and strongest songwriting to date while Butch Walker’s producing prowess makes this a must listen.
Vintage Trouble spin records to drop onto the fighting grounds, with the intent to freeze the frame long enough to momentarily halt the warring world. While at ease, we can freely choose to think before we strike or decide to retreat, rather than thoughtlessly charge into repeating history. These heavy hymns come from the heart providing a necessary rise to our ever reckoning.
Throughout the album, there are hints of Mraz’s formative releases, but it ultimately finds a kinship with 2008’s We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things. The new songs, which are unabashedly pop, see Mraz reuniting with numerous collaborators while grappling with the emotions and experiences that come with being in your mid-life.
Tommy Prine’s debut is not only a long awaited introduction but a testimony to Prine’s 20’s and the loss, love, and growth that has defined them. Co-produced by close friend and kindred musical spirit, Ruston Kelly, and beloved Nashville engineer and producer, Gena Johnson, the album is rich and dynamic from cathartic jams to nostalgic storytelling.
QOTSA’s 8th full length is instantly identifiable with the band’s sonic signature, expanded and embellished with new and unprecedented twists in virtually every song, a live in-a-room recording that showcases a band at the height of their creative powers. It’s a party for the obscene and the clean, the outcasts and the weirdos, and anyone and everyone in between.
A remarkable synthesis of songs and musicality that toggles between thundering heavy rock, electric blues, soul, funk, spoken word, English chamber-folk, and psychedelia; enhanced by a fascinating assortment of contributing artists including, Billy F Gibbons, Ivan Neville, Ruthie Foster, Billy Bob Thornton, and Celisse.

Lucinda Williams - Stories from a Rock N Roll Heart - Highway 20 Records
Three-time Grammy Award winner Lucinda Williams releases her highly anticipated new album Stories from a Rock N Roll Heart (Highway 20 Records/Thirty Tigers). 2023 is a special year for Williams: she turned 70 in January and on April 25th released her long-awaited memoir Don’t Tell Anybody The Secrets I Told You (Crown, a division of Penguin Random House LLC). The last couple years have been challenging for Williams. In 2020, a tornado damaged her new home in Nashville, followed two weeks later by the beginning of the COVID lockdown. Later that November, Williams suffered a stroke that partially impaired some of her motor skills on the left side of her body, forcing her to learn to walk again and taking away her ability to play the guitar. Stories from a Rock n Roll Heart marks a triumphant return from one of our most revered artists and songwriters. Williams is in great form as heard on her new single “New York Comeback,” written by Williams, Tom Overby and Jesse Malin, with Patti Scialfa and Bruce Springsteen on backing vocals. Stories from a Rock n Roll Heart was produced by Williams, Overby and Ray Kennedy, who also engineered. The album includes guest backing vocals by Jeremy Ivey, Jesse Malin, Buddy Miller, Angel Olsen, Margo Price and Tommy Stinson.
Neko Case - Wild Creatures - Anti
Wild Creatures is a career retrospective album containing twenty-three of Neko Case’s most impactful tracks from her discography, and will now be available on CD and 2x LP. With a career spanning over twenty years, she has famously collaborated with The New Pornographers and Case/Lang/Veirs in addition to releasing many critically acclaimed solo albums, including ‘Fox Confessor Brings The Flood’, ‘Middle Cyclone’ and most recently 2018’s ‘Hell-On’. Gathering power year after year, Neko sings with the fierce abandon of a newborn infant crying in a basket in the woods. Since escaping the labels of country and Americana, the gorgeous train-whistle vocals of her early career sit submerged in her later style, where their ghost can appear any minute. When her voice jumps an octave, it’s almost visible, like sparks at night. “I never knew where I wanted to go or what I wanted to do with my voice,” she says, “but I just wanted to do it so bad.”
