New Release Round-Up 03-08-24
Norah Jones - Visions - Blue Note
Visions is a vibrant and joyous 12-song set that finds Jones singing about feeling free, wanting to dance, making it right, and acceptance of what life brings. It’s the yang to the yin that was Pick Me Up Off The Floor, Jones’ last album of new original songs which was released early in the pandemic lockdown of 2020 and foreshadowed many of the dark emotions of that period. Indie Exclusive "Sun-kissed" Orange Blend LP. Alternate Cover Art.
STILL LISTENING TO...
Hurray For The Riff Raff - The Past Is Still Alive - Nonesuch Records
Hurray for the Riff Raff’s (aka Alynda Segarra, they/them), The Past Is Still Alive, is out now on Nonesuch Records. The record represents a new phase of beginning in Segarra’s lauded evolution as a storyteller. Created during a period filled with grief, when they found inspiration in radical poetry, railroad culture, outsider art, the work of writer Eileen Myles, and the history of activist groups like ACT UP and Gran Fury, discovering a stronger, singular style of writing that felt like a long-awaited revelation.
The album has been featured everywhere from NY Times (including a “primer” which they almost never do) to Vogue, to NPR and today it received an 8.3 Best New Music on Pitchfork. It’s currently got an 88 on metacritic, making it the 3rd best reviewed new release of the year.

What's New 3-1-24
After almost two decades of being a band, you would have thought that New Years Day would have achieved everything they ever dreamed of, but they’re not quite done yet. After a five-year hiatus, the rock quintet back with their fifth studio album. There’s no fat or gristle to chew through here, Half Black Heart is a lean, mean sound machine.
Gangbusters Melody Club is a joyous jigsaw puzzle of an album-- the band’s most dancefloor-friendly to date. The trio pack more influences than ever before into their elegant earworm songs. The jazz and swing for which they became famous over a decade ago is back with a bang, alongside their love of House, Electronica and Big Beat.
Sheer Mag capitalize on a decade’s worth of devotion to their own collective spirit—a spirit refined in both the sweaty trenches of punk warehouses and the larger-than-life glamour of concert halls—emerging with a dense work of gripping emotions, massive hooks, and masterfully constructed power-pop anthems.
The Bruce Hornsby and yMusic collaboration explores seafaring themes, sounds and metaphors encapsulated in progressive chamber music and Hornsby's vocals. It’s an album about water and the ways we live with, in or against it… Hornsby and yMusic as you have never heard them, but also instantly identifiable in their own ways.
Julian Lage returns with Speak To Me, his remarkable fourth release for Blue Note, which finds the guitar virtuoso broadening his sonic palette in collaboration with esteemed producer Joe Henry who enhances Lage’s trademark melodic lyricism on this wide-ranging set of compelling new originals.
Over ten ambitious tracks which abruptly turn from searing punk to inviting alternative pop, I Got Heaven is deeply concerned with desire, the power in being alone, and how to live in an unfeeling and unkind world. It’s a document of a band doubling down on their unshakable bond to make something furious, thrilling, and wholly alive.
Pissed Jeans are known for their feral vocals, biting lyrics, buzzsaw guitars, and unhinged live shows, and their sixth album is no exception. These songs skewer the tension between youthful optimism and the sobering realities of adulthood, and when viewed through frontman Matt Korvette’s scowl, everything takes on a level of violent absurdity.
Few if any outfits in country and roots music can make their music rise to the epic and weighty level that Shane Smith and the Saints achieve. Norther showcases the full spectrum of their style that seamlessly blends elements of country, Americana, Southern rock, folk, and a little honky-tonk with soaring four-part harmonies and Smith’s striking baritone vocals.

Liam Gallagher & John Squire - Liam Gallagher & John Squire - Warner Records
Liam and John have been friends for years but when Liam invited John to join him on stage at Knebworth in 2022 it reignited a long-running ambition of writing and recording an album together. The demos were written at John's home studio in Macclesfield and then recorded with legendary producer, Greg Kurstin and mixed by Spike Stent. Joey Waronker (Atoms for Peace, Beck, R.E.M.) plays drums on the album.
Mannequin Pussy - I Got Heaven - EPITAPH
Mannequin Pussy’s music feels like a resilient and galvanizing shout that demands to be heard. Across four albums, the Philadelphia rock band that consists of Colins “Bear” Regisford (bass, vocals), Kaleen Reading (drums, percussion), Maxine Steen (guitar, synths), and Marisa Dabice (guitar, vocals) has made cathartic tunes about despairing times. “There’s just so much constantly going on that feels intentionally evil that trying to make something beautiful feels like a radical act ,” says Dabice. “The ethos of this band has always been to bring people together.”
Their new album, I Got Heaven, which is out March 1 via Epitaph Records, is the band’s most fully realized recording yet. Over ten ambitious tracks which abruptly turn from searing punk to inviting alternative pop, the album is deeply concerned with desire, the power in being alone, and how to live in an unfeeling and unkind world. It’s a document of a band doubling down on their unshakable bond to make something furious, thrilling, and wholly alive.
Following the 2019 release of their critically acclaimed third album Patience, Mannequin Pussy returned in 2021 for their EP Perfect. They toured that release relentlessly and added guitarist Maxine Steen to the band’s official lineup. The band changed their entire creative formula, choosing to write together in the studio in Los Angeles with producer John Congleton , over slowly crafting tracks at home. “Everyone felt empowered to speak up about their own ideas to make this thing the best it could possibly be,” says Regisford.

What's New 2-23-24
El Viejo is a masterful homage to western heritage, blending traditional country with modern storytelling as Lund's gravelly vocals deliver tales of cowboy life with authenticity and depth. From haunting balladry to rollicking romps, Lund's craftsmanship shines in this captivating journey through the heart of Americana, rich with soul and sincerity.
Olustee is a masterpiece of soul-shaking music. JJ’s deep Southern roots and skill as a storyteller shine through, whether he’s rocking with gospel-tent fervor or slowly winding his raspy voice around a lyric of heartbreak and loss. It’s an aggressively groove-driven record fueled by JJ’s gritty vocals and funk-infused guitar playing.
A very "MGMT MGMT album" which the band describes as "a group of songs about love and change, first and foremost." Descriptors from the band include: bold, flavorful, playful, sincere, optimistic, perceptive. Loss Of Life was produced by MGMT and Patrick Wimberly (Solange, Lil Yachty, MGMT), with mixing by Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips).
The non-binary, London-based artist continues their evolution, by inviting listeners into their unparalleled universe of alternative, infectious pop. Traumatic Livelihood explores themes of consent, addiction, and relationships while representing the sound and spirit of Generation Z’s genderless subculture – unapologetic and impossible to define.
10 tracks of heavyweight thrash-infused extremity and sprint-worthy speed, Quad Brutal will instantly have listeners coming back for more - ready for endless reps and skipping nothing (except maybe leg day). Austrian Death Machine is prepared to climb back to the top of their weight class - packing more punch than Mr. Universe himself with Quad Brutal!
The band’s long-awaited Moon Healer is musically multifaceted, unabashedly brutal, and compellingly conceptual. It’s a mathematically mind-blowing hybrid of bludgeoning death metal specializing in unconventional riffing that echoes the resemblance of legendary experimentalists like Cynic, Atheist, and Gorguts.
This is a glimpse into the mind of Dallon Weekes. Produced by Dave Fridmann (Tame Impala, MGMT), Gloom Division is the most autobiographical work to date from Weekes (formerly of Panic! At The Disco), leaving listeners with the same sense of euphoric fascination that sparked the album’s creation.
Trailblazing powerhouse Laura Jane Grace returns with an even stronger set of ‘50s-biting rock songs on her second full-length solo album, confronting aging, dysphoria, sobriety and her own legacy. While 2020’s Stay Alive felt limited by pandemic and production, Hole in My Head is an open invitation to a wild romp through Grace’s psyche.
With the album title Blu Wav meant to be a literal mash-up of “bluegrass” and “new wave”, the new collection has a distinct feel, a uniform vibe, and a somewhat unexpected sound. Lytle incorporates the lo-fi lushness and sometimes-psychedelic orchestration Grandaddy is known for with his first foray into true country.
Originally released independently in 2016 and commercially re-released in 2020 after Peep's untimely 2017 death, Crybaby's slow, thoughtful, and sweetly dreary songs were indeed music for searching, sensitive types to play when deep in their feelings. It’s a dismal, grasping affair that feels beautiful in all of its sadness.
Elegantly progressive and seemingly allergic to cliché, Illumishade set out with a flamboyant flourish, casually blending everything from gleaming modern metal to arcane atmospherics into their always highly melodic and symphonic sound. So much for the "difficult second album". This is the kind of immaculate creation from which great legacies are built.
Suffer & Become is a potent, unforgiving force of nature which challenges your perceptions of extreme metal, dragging you kicking and screaming through a vortex of horrifying but addictive passages. It might not be an album which you gravitate to on a regular basis but it is an album which will certainly leave a lasting impression.
The legendary musicians’ second album is a skillful combination of power and precision, fun and introspection, featuring soaring harmonies and a burst of R&B with the pure essence of rock and roll. Fourteen tracks showcase the remarkably versatile musical skills including one of the most renowned rhythm sections in rock history, Russ Kunkel and Leland Sklar.
Fans of Ramsey’s former projects, Band of Horses, Father John Misty and Lord Huron, will find New Lost Ages to be a relatable reprieve - one that feels both familiar and starkly new. Traversing genre-bending terrain, the new record is as indie and psych-rock as it is singer-songwriter, showcasing his talent and dedication to the craft.
Fans of big, shiny, 21st century melodic death metal are more than catered to these days, which makes this full-blooded return to first values all the more satisfying, particularly for those of us who prefer to dwell in the dirt. Upon Stone have resurrected something of profound value here. Dead Mother Moon is the real thing, revived and realized anew by true believers.
Featuring all never-before released live audio spanning the band's entire career from 1983 to 2023. Plus, special guest Vicki Peterson of the Bangles on a searing 15-minute version of "John Coltrane Stereo Blues" from the band's recent London appearance. Includes a DVD that includes a documentary and previously unreleased one hour 1983 live concert.
