What's New 10-16-20
After a series of stand-alone singles and a release under the moniker EL VY (with Brent Knopf of Menomena), Serpentine Prison is the first solo record from Grammy-Award winning artist Matt Berninger of The National. Recorded with and produced by the legendary Booker T. Jones, it's a collection of deeply personal songs dripped in Booker's signature Memphis sound perfectly blended with Berninger's unmistakable baritone.
A commissioned jazz suite to commemorate the 60th anniversary of a turning points in the civil rights movement, No Tears Suite brings together local composers Christopher Parker & vocalist Kelley Hurt with an incredible band featuring Grammy-award winning drummer, Brian Blade and Ellington band veteran saxophonist Bobby LaVell.
Impossible Weight is a work of sublime highs and mesmerizing lows, its restless intensity both unsettling and transcendent. Co-produced by bandleader Jessica Dobson and Andy D. Park, the album's lush textures and mercurial arrangements reveal the limitless imagination of Dobson’s guitar work (which she’s previously shown in playing lead guitar for Beck and The Shins) and fully illuminates the power of her vocals.
What's New 10-9-20
As Long As You Are is an album about trust, honesty, redemption and “letting go”, allowing old wounds to heal and bringing painful chapters to a close. But being delivered via their brand of new wave synth-pop full of bright melodies and heavenly choruses, it’s as euphoric and uninhibitedly joyful as anything the band has done in their 14-year career.
Metz not only continues to push their music into new territories of dynamics, crooked melodies, and sweat-drenched rhythms, they explore the theme of growing up and maturing within a format typically suspended in youth. Covering seemingly disparate themes such as paternity, crushing social anxiety, addiction, isolation, media-induced paranoia, and the restless urge to leave everything behind, each of Atlas Vending’s ten songs offer a snapshot of today's modern condition.
The fifth album from Bahamas (Afie Jurvanen), Sad Hunk, takes its title from a nickname bestowed by his wife in reaction to how he was portrayed in the media. A collaboration from the same team as 2018’s Earthtones, the graceful guitar work of Sam Weber - a musician he discovered on YouTube - and with GRAMMY-nominated producer Robbie Lackritz, Sad Hunk is the next step in Afie’ virtuosic signature style.
The claustrophobia of the here and now - a desire to return to past states on one hand and change on the other. In some cases, repetition and return are a desirable way to deal with uncertain times; in others, the stagnancy of the present is overwhelming. Fish Pond Fish lives between the two, creating simultaneously the most bedroom-tracked (thanks quarantine) and production-heavy full-length the band has yet released.
Produced by Randall Poster and Stewart Lerman, I'd Rather Lead a Band finds Loudon Wainwright III partnering up with Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks for their take on some of the American songbook's finest classics. This album showcases a fresh side of LW3 with big band sounds and timeless songs from Irving Berlin, Cliff Friend, Lew Brown and other Tin Pan Alley contemporaries.
Creation Myths is the first album in 5 years from Elvis Perkins. Produced by Sam Cohen (Kevin Morby, Danger Mouse, etc), the album in many ways picks up where his debut Ash Wednesday (XL Recordings) left off. Subtle nods to Americana and spooky, blissed-out folk, but never lights for too long on any one spot.
The quintessential dark groove metal innovators return to deliver fans their most electrifying and introspective collection of anthems yet – Dealing With Demons I – part one of a hard-hitting double album that will have metalheads everywhere ushering in a new era! DevilDriver proves that they still reign supreme among metal’s all-time greats, leaving the listener craving what’s to come on Dealing With Demons II.
Black Pumas have unveiled a deluxe edition of their Grammy-nominated self-titled debut album via ATO Records. Features original album plus 11 bonus tracks, three new original songs and four cover tracks, plus unreleased live material. The package is updated with new artwork, and contains unpublished in-studio and live photographs.
SKALD is inspired by the Doggerland, an island that disappeared 20,000 years ago following various natural disasters (tsunami, long winter...). The Vikings tell here the history of the people who preceded them and question the role of Man for saving the planet. This is an invitation to listen to messages from the past to build the future.
Long In The Tooth delivers a truly epic collection of new material that finds the group further bridging the gap between the farfisa-fueled Ethio-Funk stylings of their early recordings, with the psychedelic, Sabbath-inspired hellfire of late. Heavy drum breaks reign supreme, setting the stage for the pulsating, hallucinatory wall of organ, menacing horns, and rugged guitar riffs to permeate your soul.
Brooklyn indie-rock stalwart Drew Citron formed Beverly in 2013, after having got her start as a touring member with Frankie Rose and The Pains of Being Pure of Heart. With Free Now, Citron, one of the most beautiful voices in indie rock, comes to the table with a whole lot of pain to sing about and the full musical knowledge to put herself, and her talents, front and center.

North Americans - Roped In - Third Man Vinyl
Patrick McDermott began his North Americans project with two albums: 2013’s No_No, and 2015’s Legends. Both records were dense affairs, with blocks of sound shifting and moving like melting glaciers to create a gorgeous, impenetrable, collection of digital drones. Though they sounded nothing like what would come a bit later, both records showcased McDermott’s understanding of mood and composition. On 2018’s Going Steady, McDermott blended his love of American Primitive guitar playing with playful pieces that never overstayed their welcome. He also began collaborating with a wide range of artists: from Julianna Barwick to guitar prodigy Hayden Pedigo, as well as Cloud Nothings’ Dylan Baldi, and more. Now, two years later, McDermott is releasing Roped In, a gorgeous, intimate, and often spare album that pulls back from the collaborative nature established on Going Steady for a collection of fragile drone pieces anchored by McDermott’s intricate but direct guitar playing and haunting pedal steel work from Portland, Oregon’s Barry Walker. Where Going Steady was brimming with ideas and micromovements, Roped In is relatively sparse, built on patience and the kind of once-in-a-lifetime collaborative energy between McDermott and Walker, and accented by occasional collaborations from harpist Mary Lattimore and guitarist William Tyler. “I wanted to focus on the simplicity of the music,” McDermott says. “I didn’t want to be beholden to this massive goal of [making music] to see how progressive and experimental it could be. I was attempting to cherish the pureness of this type of music.”

What's New 10-2-20
Stevens’ eight studio LP, The Ascension is the long awaited follow-up to Carrie and Lowell. In the time between, Stevens also released Oscar-nominated music for the Luca Guadagnino film Call Me By Your Name; a collaborative album entitled Planetarium with Nico Muhly, Bryce Dessner (The National) and James Mcalister; and scored several works for ballet: Reflections (Houston Ballet) and Principia (NYCB).
A culmination of their entire catalogue and decade-long career all wrapped up in nine glorious tracks, Good Luck With Whatever reclaims the rugged urgency and easy confidence of Dawes’ early work while tapping into the veteran band’s intense musical connection more effectively than ever before. Produced by Dave Cobb (Chris Stapleton, Brandi Carlile, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit).
The set presents a compilation of concert highlights captured the world over personally selected by Taylor, May and Lambert from over 200 shows they have performed with several featured here becoming available for the very first time. All formats include the band’s entire 22-minute Fire Fight Australia appearance in which they performed Queen’s original history-making 1985 Live Aid set in full.
This much anticipated sophomore album from the six-piece rock outfit is the good time album of 2020 that has energy, passion and instant pop nuggets. It takes bits of early 70's Rolling Stones, The Modern Lovers, The Velvet Underground and classic Southern rock, and makes something you can't help but put on repeat.
2020, the 15th studio album from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band, follows their 2016 No. 1 release, This House is Not For Sale. Jon describes the album as, “not a distinctly political record, but it’s an election year so there is a wryness in the title 2020. This record had to encompass different themes, not just politics, but the state of our world today, life, love and loss.”
Cobb captures the mindset of a man who values a simpler time despite living in a modern world. “To me, listening to this album feels like I’m sitting there with somebody, having a conversation,” Cobb says. “I would hope that it feels like sitting with an old friend you haven’t seen in a while… like those old records by Jerry Lee Lewis, Roger Miller, or Willie Nelson.”
Roger Waters‘ Us + Them concert film, which chronicles his 2017-2018 world tour, is released on CD, vinyl, Blu-ray and DVD. Waters played 156 shows to 2.3m people with a setlist that included Pink Floyd classics from The Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall, Animals, Wish You Were Here and tracks from 2017’s Is This The Life We Really Want?
Grammy Award-winning singer / songwriter (Slipknot / Stone Sour), actor, and New York Times Best-Selling Author, Corey Taylor releases his widely anticipated debut solo album, CMFT, illuminating the broad spectrum of this fiery and fearless rock ‘n’ roll master. Taylor touches on lifelong influences ranging from hard rock to classic rock, punk rock to hip-hop.
While touring in support of their Grammy-winning album Mettavolution, Rodrigo Y Gabriela performed the album in full every night at their nearly one hundred shows around the world. Mettavolution Live captures the perfect balance of melody and metal, fire and finesse, which they have honed over the twenty-plus years of playing together (including a 20-minute-plus live version of Pink Floyd’s epic "Echoes").
Exhilaratingly fresh whilst incorporating nostalgic 90s nu-metal vibes – vocalist Justin Bonitz is a man possessed, wildly careering from blood curdling shrieks to lighting quick rap bars. Throw in electronic elements and all mighty riffs plus modern hardcore breakdowns and Tallah are 2020’s answer to Slipknot. For fans of Korn, Code Orange, Slipknot, Deftones and Vein.
The First Lady of Song returns to Berlin, home of her legendary concerts. Recorded in 1962 but never released, hear the most popular jazz singer of all time deliver an iconic performance at Sportpalast Berlin for the first time. This recording finds Ella and her band at the top of their game recorded in high fidelity stereo.
Started as a Beatles cover band to play his birthday, Jamie Davis nabbed frontmen Miles Kane (The Last Shadow Puppets) and Nic Cester (Jet), guitarists Graham Coxon (Blur), Matt Bellamy (Muse) on bass and drummer Sean Payne (The Zutons). Post-birthday, Bellamy and Davis started working on an album, focusing on lost Northern Soul classics, supplemented by their raw, soulful takes on some famous standards.
Much like Lean's overall catalogue, the new album feels almost impossibly cohesive. In part, that's thanks to production entirely from longtime collaborator whitearmor - they kept the sessions intimate and secluded, recording partly in an old ballet hall in the Swedish countryside. But this is an album only Lean could make, as a young veteran, with a sound and career that's well-entrenched globally but still on its own planet.
